PLOT DESCRIPTION:
"TragiComic trans-identifying confessional" and "obscene, maniacal song-and-dance burlesque comedian" seem incompatible, but Vulva Va-Voom (They/Them) has combined stranger, stickier elements onstage. The gritty nightclub headliner inhabits bizarrely imaginative world-building...but that world is impacted by politics.
Who gets to define whether someone’s a drag queen, king, or in-between? Vulva has mostly appeared onstage as femme—spirit-gummed beards and nipples are harder to scrape off at 4am—but does femme presentation invalidate nonbinary credibility?
As Vulva executes a live “female drag to male” makeover, they explore labels, identity, and their dire real-world experiences when “laughter as a constant coping mechanism” fell short. More intimate than their usual off-the-charts raucous debauchery, this piece combines vulnerability with absurdity, and— as usual— absinthe with uppers. Hardships, meet hilarity.
